Hypoxia-induced HAS2-AS1 expression is dependent on both HIF-1α and NF-κB that directly bind to and activate the HAS2-AS1 promoter. HAS2-AS1 mediates the hypoxia-induced cell invasiveness. HAS2-AS1 contributes to hypoxia-induced EMT in CD44- and RHAMM-dependent manners. HAS2-AS1 is necessary for the transcription of its sense counterpart HAS2 upon hypoxia treatment. HAS2-AS1 is up-regulated in OSCC tissues compared with normal tissue. In addition, hypoxia induces the expression of HAS2-AS1 in OSCC cells in an HIF-1α dependent manner. Moreover, HAS2-AS1 is essential for the transcription of HAS2, thereby mediating the hypoxia-induced invasiveness of OSCC cells
