PHLPP dephosphorylates a key regulatory serine residue (Ser473) in the C-terminal tail of Akt, termed the hydrophobic motif, to inactivate it. Further work demonstrated that PHLPP is able to directly dephosphorylate other AGC kinases at their hydrophobic motif, most notably protein kinase C (PKC) (27913677)
